2024 wasn’t exactly a tech-heavy year for me. Compared to previous years, I didn’t manage to add much to my tech arsenal. But what I did get left an impression. From nostalgic gaming devices to trusty everyday tools, here’s my recap of the best tech I purchased and how it fit into my life.
1. A Pixel 7 Pro (128GB, Obsidian Black)
One of the best (yet saddest) purchases I made in 2024. Why sad? Because it marked the end of an era for my trusty LG G8X with the Dual Screen case. After years of use, its buttons had fallen off, and the battery was on its last legs, forcing me to “upgrade.”
What made the LG G8X special was its dual-screen setup, which I utilized daily for reviewing documents, content, and multitasking. Transitioning to the Pixel 7 Pro wasn’t hard, but I did find myself relying more on my PC than my phone for productivity.
Still, the Pixel 7 Pro proved to be an excellent device for the price. It has a great screen, decent battery life, and an impressive design. The cameras were a lifesaver during my Switzerland trip, capturing stunning moments and life events in 2024. While the Pixel 9 is now out, the 7 Pro remains a competent and reliable companion.
2. Anbernic RG35XX SP
This handheld console became my travel buddy late in 2024. Modeled after the iconic Game Boy Advance SP, the RG35XX SP combines nostalgia with functionality. It’s compact, lightweight, and well-built—perfect for gaming on the go.
I took it with me to Switzerland and other trips, and it proved to be a fun distraction during downtime. For 2025, I’m eyeing more emulation devices, possibly the GPD Win 4 2025. But for now, the RG35XX SP holds a special place as my portable blast to the past.
3. KZ Castor Harman Target with Improved Bass Version IEMs
This was by far my most recommended purchase of 2024. I went through three pairs (thanks to my dog’s appetite for IEMs) because I couldn’t imagine life without them.
Paired with my LG G8X, they delivered excellent sound quality, especially for bass lovers like me. They work decently with my laptop but struggle when used with a USB-C dongle on my Pixel. Audio experts, feel free to chime in with recommendations!
4. Tangzu WAN ER SG
An impulse buy driven by aesthetics, the Tangzu WAN’ER SG is gorgeous but not quite up to par with the KZ Castor in performance. Its sound profile leans flat and dry, which doesn’t suit my bass-heavy preferences. While it’s not my favorite, it’s still a decent option for those who prioritize looks over bass.
5. Antec Fusion HTPC case
This might seem like an odd entry, but hear me out. For SGD 50 (around MYR 150 at the time), I snagged this gem in Singapore to build a sleeper HTPC. PC parts are insanely expensive in Malaysia due to inflation, so I’d been holding off on building a new system. But this case was too good to pass up.
While I haven’t completed the build yet, the case’s retro aesthetic and functionality make it a standout purchase. 2025 will be the year I finally bring this project to life.
6. Double-Walled Coffee Cup
Surprisingly, this was my favorite “tech” of 2024. Imagine holding a cup of hot coffee and not feeling the heat. This humble double-walled cup became my most-used item, perfect for my daily coffee and other beverages. Sometimes, it’s the simplest tools that make the biggest impact.
Looking Ahead to 2025
2024 may not have been a year filled with cutting-edge tech, but each purchase had its purpose and added value to my daily life. For 2025, I’m planning to explore more emulation devices, complete my HTPC build, and maybe invest in better audio solutions. And who knows, maybe I’ll find another everyday hero like my double-walled coffee cup.
