The exemption of road tax for EVs has finally come into effect in Malaysia. Transport minister Wee Ka Siong and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) officially announced that the exemption will take place between 1st January 2022 and 31st December 2025.
However, only EVs and fuel cell vehicles are eligible for the exemption. It is not applicable to hybrids as it still uses an engine.
EV owners that already paid their road tax can return their road tax for a refund and subsequently apply for the EVs officially exempted from road tax until 2025. Differently-abled people (OKU) is also eligible for road tax exemptions. Vehicles modified for disabled use and a valid disability card issued by JKM is all it takes (also extends to parents, guardians, spouses).
